Hitoshi Nakamura, conductor

Hitoshi Nakamura graduated from the Department of Vocal Music, Faculty of Music, Tokyo University of the Arts, and completed his Master’s degree in Vocal Performance at the university’s Graduate School of Music.

During his graduate studies, he was awarded the Muto Mai Scholarship and undertook research in Vienna, Austria. He studied voice under Masami Ueda, Hiroto Nakamura, Noriko Sasaki, Teruo MiBayashi, Ryo Sakurada, and the late Kurt Equiluz.

He received Second Prize and the Rentarō Taki Prize at the 68th Rentarō Taki Memorial All-Japan High School Vocal Competition, which also granted him a scholarship to the Vienna International Seminar. He was further awarded Second Prize and the Ambassador of Spain Prize at the 2nd Spain International Music Competition.

Nakamura regularly presents recitals, including Complete Performances of Schubert’s Three Great Song Cycles and Tracing the Musical City of Vienna. On the operatic stage, he has appeared as Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore and Pelléas in Pelléas et Mélisande. He has also been featured on TV Tokyo’s program The Karaoke★Battle. In addition, he is deeply committed to the promotion of choral music, serving as a lecturer at choral workshops and as a judge for competitions such as the NHK All-Japan School Choir Competition.

His publications include Così fan tutte — Approaches to Reading the Libretto and Music. His recordings feature Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin and Winterreise. His compositions include Hamletmaschine for Alto Saxophone and Piano and 11:02 — Testimonies of the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Survivors.

He is a member of the Musicological Society of Japan, the Japanese Society for Music Education, the Japanese Society for Aesthetics, and the Kyushu Composers’ Association. After teaching at Kwassui Women’s University, he assumed the position of full-time lecturer at Tsuru University in April 2025.
